City Council briefs: Jan. 12 meeting

The Princeton City Council acted on the following business during its Jan. 12 meeting: 

• approved an interim use permit for Sherburne State Bank on behalf of The Crossing Church which leases space from the bank at the Riverside Plaza Mall in downtown Princeton. The permit allows church services and other religious activities to be conducted in the city’s B-1 central business district. Such is allowed in the district provided an interim use permit is approved.

The Crossing Church has been operating in the space for about a year or more but the permit had not been issued before Jan. 12 this year. Princeton city Zoning Administrator/Development Director Carie Fuhrman noted that a sign will also have to be applied for by the church and possibly a building permit for interior modification of the space that was once the Princeton Party House.

• accepted a $150 donation from John and Carol Hulett of rural Princeton to the city for use by the Princeton Fire and Rescue Department.

• accepted a donation of $4,000 from the Eddy Family Foundation, of which half will go to the police department and half to the fire and rescue department. City Administrator Mark Karnowski commented that it was a pleasant surprise as there had been an indication before that the foundation which has given such gifts in the past to the city, might not be able to do it again.

• accepted a radar unit donated to the police department from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety’s Office of Traffic Safety. The resolution accepting this was a formality of the council already agreeing to accept it during a presentation at a previous meeting.

• authorized making a partial payment of just over $557,936 to Rice Lake Construction Group, the general contractor for the current expansion of the city’s wastewater treatment facility. Karnowski reported that the project is on schedule.

• adjusted fees again in the city’s fee schedule, this time for the building inspection services, which is provided by Metro West. It includes removing four services that were listed as requiring $30 per hour. The reason for their removal was because they had been established in 1992 when the city had a full time building inspector on staff. An example of the service then that was $30 per hour was for inspections outside or normal business hours. Also removed were an old $30 inspection fee for manufactured or mobile homes, and a $250 inspection fee for prefabricated single family dwellings. A $100 inspection fee was added for a manufactured home, and a $25 fee for inspecting a fence with a height of six feet or less.

• accepted additions to the fire department and to the police department’s reserve unit, under the consent agenda. Michelle Murray and George Wallace were accepted as regular firefighters, having completed all the requirements to move out of the customary probationary status. This makes for close to 34 regular firefighters on the department. Laurence Stephen Brinson and Shane Lucas Duncan were the reserve officers added to the police department’s reserve officer roster, which already included Cary Hartigan, Matt Bishman, Ben Hanson, Jon Steinbrecher and Justin Roberts.

• approved resolution 12-01 to do the following: adopted the council’s rules of procedure (the same adopted in 2010) ; designated the Princeton offices of Bemer Bank, People’s Bank of Commerce, Spire Financial Federal Credit Union, US Bank, and Sherburne State Bank, plus Edward Jones, Citi Smithy Barney, and RBC Dain Rauscher as official depositories for city funds; designated the city treasurer to have the authority to approve collateral as security for city funds, and designate the Princeton Union-Eagle as the official newspaper for the city.
