New school calendar saves money

The biggest change in the school calendar for 2012-2013 that was approved at the Feb. 21 Milaca School Board meeting was from half days to full days for staff development.

And, as it turns out, the changes will save the district about $40,000.

Superintendent Jerry Hansen says the change will allow parents to secure day care services for a full day instead of the more-difficult half day time period.

And putting those full days on Friday up against other holidays will create longer weekends for students.

Examples of that are spring break and Presidents Day.

“It looks bigger but we lost only ten and a half hours of instructional time,” said Hansen. “And we will save $30,000 in transportation costs that we had on those half days.”

Hansen said the total savings will be about $40,000 because of not having to pay some wages for those who would be working on the half days.

The calendar committee met a number of times and “had a lot of good discussion,” Hansen said, so that the item passed unanimously when it came to the full board last week.
