Paynesville tops Milaca in sub-section

Paynesville, seeded No. 7, upended No. 2-seeded Milaca 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the Section 6AA, Sub-Section 18 Softball Tournament Friday (May 18) at Sod Park in Milaca.

The Bulldogs, now 9-8, scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 4-2 lead. Kayla Schaefer had four hits to lead Paynesville while senior pitcher Ashley Johnson and sophomore catcher Natalie Bernard each had a double and a single for Milaca.

Johnson, who struck out 15, took the loss while Megan Schaefer pitched the win.

Milaca finished with a 10-6 record.

In other sub-section games, top-seeded Albany trimmed No. 8-seeded Foley 13-3, No. 4-seeded Holdingford stopped No. 5-seeded St. Cloud Cathedral 13-3 and No. 3-seeded Little Falls blanked No. 6-seeded Pierz 8-0.

In semifinal games Monday, May 21, Little Falls hosts Paynesville and Albany hosts Holdingford.
