Reed honored by Order of Eastern Star

The Order of Eastern Star (OES) Kedron Chapter 120 honored member Larry Reed, of Milaca, during the Rum River Festival’s Distinguished Service Awards banquet in Princeton June 6. Reed has been with the OES for 44 years, of which 17 or 18 have been in Princeton, and the rest at the OES chapter in Plymouth, Minn.

Reed, 82, has also been a Mason for 60 years, and his family has a heritage of being in either the Masons or OES. Reed joined the Masons in 1951 with his father in Toledo, Ohio, where Larry Reed grew up and met his wife Pat. “I went into the Eastern Star so my wife and I would have a place to go together,” Reed said recently. The Masons is for men only while the OES has men and women.

Talking about the OES, Larry Reed said that the organization is a place where “people talk the same language and understand each other, and do some things we enjoy as brothers and sisters, which is what we call each other.”

Reed continued that OES, besides having rituals, does a lot of fundraising for educational scholarships.

OES Worthy Matron Judy Putnam noted that Reed has held a lot of offices in the OES and called him a “kind and gentle man.” She said he is “very attentive to the organization. If people need help, he is always there to help.”
