Nelson, Joyce Elaine (Freer), age 85 formerly of Slayton, Red Wing and Milaca, MN died peacefully Saturday August 11, 2012 in Woodville, WI.
Joyce Elaine was born on February 20, 1927 in Minneapolis, MN to Fred and Nellie (Hamilton) Freer. She attended Fairmont High School prior to graduating from Hamline University. She was married to Melvin Nelson from 1949 to 1968 and had six children. She had a passion for learning and teaching, retiring from Slayton in 1988. During her free time, Joyce enjoyed spending time with her family and traveling. As an accomplished artist she was featured in a solo art show. She had a love of life and the fine arts. She was very proud to have backpacked 302 miles of the Appalachian Trail at the age of 70! Melvin and her parents preceded her in death. Missed by her children: Larry (Anne Markfort) Nelson, Byron Nelson, Fred (Alison) Nelson, Jeanne (Douglas) VanDeWiele, Patti (Larry Moy) Nelson, John Nelson, and her nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Her smile will be missed. A service was held at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Baldwin, WI officiated by Pastor Leroy Nelson.
