Richard Modeen

Richard Frank Modeen died at the beautiful age of 86 on Wednesday, August 29, 2012, north of Princeton, MN.

Richard Modeen was born on February 19, 1926 in Minneapolis, the son of Roy and Blanche (Bailey) Modeen. In his youth he lived on the north side of 41st and Colfax.  He went to Edison High School and graduated in 1944.  Richard attended the U of M in Agriculture and Business. He served 2 years in the US Army in Azores, near Portugal, primarily doing construction and building landing strips.

On July 20, 1952, Richard married his wife of 60 years, Lois, at Salem Lutheran Church in the Camden neighborhood, Minneapolis.  Richard and Lois met at a ballroom in Princeton.  Richard was the founder of Modeen Company.  In 1952-53 he worked as a window installer for Rusco, became self-employed.  In 1962, Richard did the window installations for all Sears Stores in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area until his retirement in 1990.  He referred to himself as a “contractor”.


Richard loved to play cribbage, the game of strategy and math.  In his youth, he raised carrier pigeons, liked to dance and especially do the “Linde”.  Richard loved going to the cabin on Woman Lake in Longville where he enjoyed making pancakes for the family.  He participated in all water activities, ice fishing, especially spearing the Northerns and deer hunting at the Barrett Farm near Crown, MN.  Richard loved to walk and took health and fitness seriously being a member of the Princeton Health and Fitness.  He volunteered and taught computer classes at the Princeton Library.  Richard enjoyed traveling and they traveled the world as members of the Friendship Force.  Richard and Lois celebrated their 50th Anniversary by going on an Alaskan Cruise, with all his family members.


Richard’s was focused on the community, lending a helping hand whenever possible.

He was involved in many service organizations:  Richard was Past President of Brooklyn Center Lions Club where he was a member for 30 years before transferring to Princeton Lions Club in 1996.  He did work for the Lions Eyebank and “Out of Site Club”; Princeton Habitat for Humanity; member of Princeton Golf Club and Princeton Trinity Lutheran Church.


Richard is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lois; daughter: Kathy (Greg) Harvey of Ramsey; son:  Rick Modeen of Maple Grove; daughter: Liann (Scott) Smith of North Bend, WA; grandchildren: Justin Harvey, Sarai (Matt) Childs, Amy Smith, Laura (Jordan) Lamborn; sister: Betty (Albie) Alferdson; many nieces and nephews.


Visitation:  12 Noon – 1 PM, Sunday, September 2, 2012 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Princeton, MN.


Memorial Service:  1:00 PM, Sunday, September 2, 2012 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Princeton, MN.


In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Habitat for Humanity.
