Outdoors groups: Turn in poachers

With the deer hunting season nearing, local DNR and Minnesota Deer Hunters Association are reminding hunters and land owners to be responsible and turn in poachers.

The new TIP trailer belonging to the Minnesota  Department of Natural Resources made an appearance at the Mille Lacs County Fair earlier in August. The East Central Chapter of the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association set a challenge to other chapters to purchase the trailer for the TIP program.

The area chapter gave the first $500 toward the challenge. The trailer, purchased by donations raised by chapters of the deer hunting organization, made a tour of county fairs this summer. East Central MDHA President Scott Minks said their initial contribution locked in the trailer for the local county fair.

The TIP trailer displays various mounts that were made after authorities confiscated  them from poachers. It includes a full mount of a trophy buck taken in south central Minnesota last year.

Hunters and outdoors enthusiasts are encouraged to contact TIP President Doug Bermel 612-750-2826 to learn more about how they can prevent the illegal taking of game in their area.

Residents are urged to contact TIP’s statewide, toll-free number, 1-800-652-9093 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to report poachers. For non-time sensative reports, visit www.dnr.state.mn.us/enforcement/tipreporting.html and fill out the DNR’s email form.
