Teen pedestrian killed after being struck

A 14-year-old Onamia girl has died after she was struck from behind by a vehicle as she walked with friends to attend a football game around 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 7.

The Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Office reports that Michal Kunesh, 37, of Onamia was driving westbound on 350th Street in Onamia when he struck the girl. Kunesh called authorities to report the crash.

An off-duty deputy and a Mille Lacs Health System EMT happened to be traveling along the same road, also headed for the football game, when they stopped to administer first aid. The Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Office, the Onamia Fire Department, Mille Lacs Ambulance Service, Minnesota State Patrol and the Mille Lacs Tribal Police also responded to the scene.

The girl was taken to the Mille Lacs Hospital in Onamia where she died.

The accident is under investigation, and authorities said that alcohol does not appear to be a factor.
