Milaca scores big volleyball victory over Foley

Milaca topped rival Foley 3-0 in a Granite Ridge Conference volleyball match Tuesday, Sept. 11, at Milaca.

“It was a big win, a win against a big rival,” said Milaca Coach Jamie Taylor.

The Wolves, who had been pointing to their match against the Falcons since the start of fall drills, scored a sweep, stopping Foley 25-18, 25-11 and 25-13.

“The team played its best complete match of the season,” said Taylor. “It was a great atmosphere – the crowd was loud and really into the match. Our fans gave us a big boost.

“Foley is a big rivalry and this is the only time we see them during the regular season. We served well and put pressure on them with our serves and hitting. We’ve been stressing those aspects all season and it showed in the match.”

Senior Sadie Hunt had five set assists and seven digs while junior Olivia Wolbert had 11 sets and four digs and senior Talbot Millar had five set assists and four digs. Senior Ali Prince had six digs.

“We stayed focused when Foley rallied in the third game,” added Taylor. “We were able to turn them back with good hitting and a big block.”

Taylor cited key blocks by Hunt and senior Tori Broberg in that third game.

On Thursday, Sept. 19, Zimmerman defeated Milaca 3-0 in a GRC match at Milaca. The Thunder won the first game 25-16 and followed that with 25-15 and 25-16 victories.

It was Zimmerman’s sixth victory in a row.

“Zimmerman has some excellent players who serve and hit extremely well,” said Taylor. “I was disappointed in our offense and serving but Zimmerman had a lot to do with our poor offensive performance.

“They are one of the top teams in the conference and we have some work to do to reach that next level. I think we will give them a tougher match next time.”

The Wolves are at Zimmerman Oct. 16.

Milaca, 5-7 overall and 2-1 in GRC matches, is at Albany tonight (Thursday) at 7:15, then travels to Princeton Monday, also at 7:15.
