Race cars burn in garage fire

The remains of a Saturday garage fire at 16907 319th Ave. in Blue Hill Township are pictured here on Monday morning. The frames of several cars can be seen, including some that were used for racing.

Three dirt-track race cars were among four vehicles destroyed Saturday in the garage at a Blue Hill Township residence.

The fire was at about 7:15 p.m., about 6 1/2 miles southwest of Princeton at 16907 319th Ave.

Princeton firefighters responded to find a 32-foot by 50-foot, unattached garage fully engulfed by fire, according to Princeton Fire Captain Troy Thompson. Within a few minutes, the roof of the garage collapsed, said Thompson, who noted that firefighters didn’t clear the scene until 10:30 p.m.

There was nothing that could be done to save the garage or its contents, Thompson said. Tools and racing equipment were among the items destroyed. A renter was home at the time, Thompson said.

It is suspected that the fire started when spilled fuel was ignited by a spark from a battery charger, Thompson said.
