Sports Flashbacks

Oct. 10, 2002

•Trailing 88-84, Milaca notched first place and third place in the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, to edge Princeton 94-92 in a Rum River Conference girls swimming and diving dual at Milaca. Junior Jackie Packard, eighth-grader Maggie Doty, sophomore Jenna Zimmer and senior Chrissy Dee teamed to place first in the relay in 3:59.51. Eighth-graders Megan Westling, Anika Erickson and Sara Monroe and sophomore Maggie Mycue placed third in 4:05.97.

•Senior Jessi Struffert placed first to lead Milaca’s girls at the Foley Cross Country Invitational, covering the 4,000-meter course in 16:12. Sophomore Sara Hanenburg was sixth in 17:16.

•Princeton stopped Milaca 21-6 last Friday in Milaca’s homecoming game at Claffy Field. Milaca’s touchdown came on an 18-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Cody Pearson to sophomore receiver Jon Moorlag. Senior fullback Adam Miron rushed for 90 yards for the Tigers. Milaca slipped to a 1-5 record.

•It was a football reunion for Milaca graduates when Gustavus hosted St. John’s last Saturday in St. Peter. Zach Zimmer, Kurt Bauerly and Casey Hoehn are members of the Gusties while Josh Nelson is on the Johnnie squad. St. John’s scored a 20-7 victory.


Oct. 7, 1992

•After losing the first two games, Milaca won the next three and topped Becker 3-2 in a non-conference volleyball match at Milaca. Coach Gwen Garber’s team was led by Gretchen Brink, Becca Janski, Amy Sauer and Bobbi Jo Herubin.

•Sauk Rapids topped Milaca 34-6 in a Rum River Conference football game last Friday at Sauk Rapids. Fullback Mike Ash rushed for 48 yards to lead Milaca.


Oct. 13, 1982

•Fullback Joe Meixell rushed for 76 yards and three touchdowns as Milaca trimmed Foley 24-6 in a Rum River Conference football game at Foley. Quarterback Kris Shefveland added 80 yards rushing and halfback Brian Broschofsky netted 60 yards.
