Relay, diver pace Milaca at section

Milaca’s girls swimming and diving team placed seventh at the Section 5A Championships Nov. 9-10 at the Grand Rapids Middle School.

“We were pleased with our team’s efforts,” said co-head coach Jennifer Burroughs. “We were happy with a seventh-place finish in a strong section and very pleased to have so many medalists.

“Overall, it was a great experience for our young team and a good way for our seniors to close out their swim careers.”

Milaca’s top placers were its 200-yard relay team and sophomore diver BryAnna Paulson.

The relay team of sophomores Rachel Airhart, Tara Airhart and Ashley Cassens, and junior Sarah Forker placed fourth with a time of 1:46.78. Foley won the event in 1:41.56.

Paulson, who was 15th a year ago, placed sixth with a score of 313.35. Tara Airhart was 12th. Monticello senior Breazy Ciatti won diving with a score of 370.05.

Other top placers for the Wolves included:

-The 400 freestyle relay team of Cassens, Tara Airhart, Rachel Airhart and Forker, which placed fifth in 4:00.55. Foley was first in 3:40.85.

-The 200 medley relay team of Juniors Leah Crain and Ori Scherer, senior Sami Mitchell and Cassens, which placed eighth in 2:06.63. Monticello was first in 1:53.14.

-Forker, who was ninth in the 50-yard freestyle.

-Scherer, who was 10th in the 100 butterfly.

Milaca placed ninth in 2011.

Monticello, the defending champion, retained its title with a score of 493 points while Big Lake was second at 420, Foley was third at 297, Princeton was fourth at 197, Sauk Rapids-Rice was fifth at 180 and Proctor Hermantown was sixth at 159.

Milaca was seventh at 135, Becker was eighth at 104, Cloquet/Esko/Carlton was ninth at 91, Duluth Denfeld placed 10th at 69, Ogilvie was 11th at 40 and Zimmerman was 12th at 26.

The top two placers in each of the swimming events gained berths to the state meet, along with the top four divers.

The state meet was Thursday, Friday and Saturday (Nov. 15-16-17) at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center.
