Milaca went 4-0 to win the Waconia Wildcats Wrestling Invitational Saturday. It was the first action of the season for the Wolves.
Milaca trimmed LeSueur-Henderson 67-8 in its first match, then topped Marshall 42-30 and Waconia 37-30 to move to what proved to be the title match in the round-robin tournament against Shakopee.
With the Wolves trailing 21-18, sophomores Josh Otten at 170 pounds and Austin Weidner at 182 scored pins to give Milaca a 30-21 edge. After Chaydon O’Fallon notched a pin for Shakopee to cut the margin to 30-27, sophomore Zach Peterson clinched the victory for Milaca with a third-period pin at 220.
Junior Brandon Merten won a decision at heavyweight to make the final score 39-27.
Sophomore Hunter Noor at 120, senior Mike Hoffman at 126, senior Joey Curtis at 132 and Otten at 170 were 4-0 in the tournament, with Otten scoring three pins. Senior Jonah Gahm was 3-0.
Milaca travels to Mora Thursday, Dec. 6, for a Granite Ridge Conference match at 7:30 p.m. Milaca and Mora are considered among the favorites in Section 7AA.
The Wolves host their invitational Saturday, Dec. 8, with the opening matches at 9 a.m.
