Wolves boys open with 2 victories

It’s nice to be 2-0 after the first two games of the season.

That’s the position Milaca’s boys basketball team found itself in last week.

The Wolves topped Pine City 73-58 Tuesday, Dec. 4, in their season opener, then followed with a 58-26 victory over Ogilvie Thursday, Dec. 6. Both games were non-conference and both were at Milaca.

“Overall, it was fun to start the season that way,” said second-year Milaca coach Dustin Naumann. “We did some good things we can build off of but we still have plenty of work to do as the season moves forward.

The Wolves led Pine City 30-26 at halftime before outscoring the Dragons 43-32 in the second half.

“We started the game a little slow on the offensive end but we had good defensive stops that gave the offense time to get going,” said Naumann. “We really hit the boards and won that battle 34-13 and we shot 66 percent from two-point range, which is excellent.”

Sophomore forward Mike Garber was 10-for-10 from the field and led the Wolves with 23 points. Junior center Matt VanSomeren dominated the inside and tallied 19 points while junior guard Brian Kiel scored 10 points and had six rebounds and six assists.

“We had too many careless turnovers and we didn’t shoot free throws very well,” added Naumann.

Kiel’s three-pointer at the buzzer gave Milaca a 23-15 halftime lead against Ogilvie. The Wolves blew the game open with a 35-11 margin in the second half.

VanSomeren led Milaca with 16 points while Kiel scored 11 and Garber had nine. Junior guard Cameron Sundberg scored seven points and had five offensive rebounds.

“We were able to work the ball inside and that was a factor,” said Naumann.

The two wins equalled Milaca’s total of last season.

The Wolves are at Kimball for a non-conference game Tuesday, Dec. 18, at 7:30. They travel to Collegeville for the St. John’s Prep Tournament Dec. 20-21-22.

UPDATE: Mora defeated Milaca in a Granite Ridge Conference game Tuesday, Dec. 11, at Milaca.
