FCS girls score two victories

Faith Christian School’s girls basketball team probably enjoyed its holiday break.

It didn’t hurt that the Saints went into the break on the heels of a pair of victories.

The Saints trimmed North Metro of Roseville 44-40 Tuesday, Dec. 18, then defeated Calvin Christian of Fridley 43-33 Thursday, Dec. 20. Both games were at FCS.

“We played pretty well, overall,” said Faith Christian Coach Mike Sohre. “The girls are working hard and taking pride in their defense and team chemistry and it is definitely paying off.

“They are running the offense well and are getting a lot of open looks. When our shots start falling we are going to be very tough to beat.”

The Saints led North Metro 21-14 at halftime. North Metro closed to within 38-36 with two minutes remaining in the second half but a three-point basket by sophomore guard Hannah Thompson gave FCS a five-point lead.

Junior center/forward Faith Britton led the Saints as she hauled off 22 rebounds and scored 13 points. The 22 rebounds was a school record. Senior forward/center Jamie Nelson had 13 points and senior guard Madde Brown had nine assists, four steals and two points.

Faith Christian had a 45-23 edge in rebounds.

FCS held Calvin Christian to six points in the first half as it took a 23-6 lead.

Sophomore center Ashley Johnson had 12 points and 17 rebounds while Britton scored 11 points and had 12 rebounds. Nelson and junior guard Andi Vermeer each scored nine points.

Sohre credited a box-and-one defense with holding Calvin ace center Claire Stephens to 10 points. He also cited his team’s 45-19 edge in rebounds.

Faith Christian returns to action Friday, hosting South Metro of Bloomington at 5:15 p.m.
