Three injured in Sherburne County bus crash

BIG LAKE — Three people were injured Thursday following a vehicle/ school bus accident. According to Sherburne County Sheriff, Joel Brott, the accident occurred at 2:30 p.m. in the 21300 block of County Road 5 in Big Lake Township. The driver of the bus, which was loaded with 30 passengers, had brought the bus to a stop to unload passengers when the bus was struck from behind by a juvenile male driving a passenger vehicle. After striking the bus, his vehicle continued into the ditch where it struck a tree.

The driver of the passenger vehicle was airlifted to North Memorial Hospital. The driver of the bus was identified as Rachelle Bayer, 45, of Big Lake. She, and a juvenile student who was on the bus, were transported by ambulance to Centracare Hospital in Monticello with minor injuries.

The sheriff’s office was assisted by the MN State Patrol, Big Lake Police and Big Lake Fire. The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
