Courthouse skylight to be replaced

County commissioners have approved spending about $50,000 to install a new skylight at the courthouse and demolish the previous one.
Earlier this year, glass panels fell from the skylight, and much of the rotunda at the courthouse has been roped off since.
Only two companies in the state do that kind of work, and W.L. Hall Co., Hopkins, was the only one to bid on the project. The bid of $40,900 to purchase and install a new skylight was accepted at the June 4 county board meeting. An amount of up to $10,000 was approved for demolishing the existing skylight.
“We will need to bring in a crane,” said County Administrator Roxy Traxler in response to a question by Commissioner Roger Tellinghuisen.
Tellinghuisen said he thought it would be a good idea to try to do demolition with the crane that would be brought in for installation, and thus reduce costs.
