Bomb threat strikes Walmart

Princeton Police have identified a person of interest in connection to a July 30 bomb threat at the Princeton Walmart store.
Walmart customers got more out of their shopping experience than they bargained for on Tuesday, July 30.
The store, at 300 21st St. in Princeton, was evacuated and off limits to both customers and staff for nearly four hours after store personnel received a bomb threat by telephone.
The call came in at about 7:30 p.m. Store staff called manager Tim Gould, who responded to the store and then called police. Princeton Police arrived at about 7:45 p.m., said Sgt. Joe Backlund of the Princeton Police Department.
Officers met with the management staff and were briefed on what was said by the caller. It was at that point that the decision was made to evacuate the store, Backlund said.
Princeton Police, Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Department, the Princeton Fire Department and the Baldwin Fire Department did an outside search of that perimeter. Police also worked with the Walmart’s loss prevention staff in searching the inside of the store. A bomb dog from Hennepin County and two bomb dogs from the Airport Police Department were brought to Princeton to aid in searching the store, Backlund said. Both the Princeton Police Department and the Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s Depart K-9 units were on scene, but those two dogs are not trained to identify explosives.
“We cleared at about 11:30 p.m.,” Backlund said.
As the investigation into the matter progressed, investigators were able to trace back to the caller the phone call in which the threat was made.
“We have a person of interest,” Backlund said.
The bomb threat was isolated to the Princeton Walmart. It was not part of a plot against Wal-Mart Stores Inc., nor was it connected to an unfounded bomb threat at the Cambridge Walmart being talked about on social media sites. There was no bomb threat in Cambridge, Backlund said. That report was nothing more than a rumor.
