Girl wins international pedal tractor pull competition

Michelle Reynolds, Princeton, won in the age 5 bracket in the international pedal tractor pull competition in Fairfield, Iowa, on Aug. 11, making her a world champion in the event.michelle-reynolds-trophies

Reynolds was 6 at the time, but was in the age 5 category because that was her age when she won the national event this year that advanced her to this year’s international competition, her mother Genny Reynolds explained last week.

Michelle, with her full head of striking curly, red hair, began showing well in pedal tractor pull competition when she placed third in the state meet in Hutchinson on Sept. 8, 2012. Next was her championship at nationals in Mitchell, S.D., on Sept. 22 this year.

Area events she excelled in this year were:

•July 25 – First at Kanabec County Fair for age 6 boys and girls.

•July 26 – First at Isanti County Fair age 6 girls.

•July 26 – First for age 6 boys and girls at Princeton Area Chamber of Commerce block party.

•Aug. 2 – First for age 6 girls at Pine County Fair.

•Aug. 8 – First for age 6 boys and girls at Mille Lacs County Fair.

Typically, kids in brackets ages 4-12 operate a pedal tractor to see who can pull a sled the farthest down a 30-foot track. The sled has a weight that slides forward on the sled as the tractor advances, increasing the sled pressure against the ground, thus making it more difficult to pull.

Michelle says it is difficult fitting in these pedal tractors, but adds that it was “fun and exciting” when she won at nationals. She hopes to win next year’s nationals when she will be in the age 7 bracket.

Genny Reynolds and husband Jeff said that the favorite part for them as Michelle’s parents was receiving the Nov. 1, 2011, resolution from the Minnesota House congratulating Michelle for her “outstanding performances in pedal tractor pull competitions.”

The resolution has the signatures of House speaker Kurt Zellers, Rules and Legislative Administration chair Matt Dean, and State House Rep. Sondra Erickson, of Princeton.
