On a wet and cold Sept. 28, Princeton tied Section 7A girls soccer partner Esko 1-1, with Taylor Laabs scoring off an Alanna Mattson free kick. The Eskomos answered with a rebound shot after keeper April Schmidt made in initial diving save.
“We were missing five players for the match, but Mariah Albrecht and Katie Bialka stepped in for us with composed plays and good leadership,” noted Tiger Coach Heidi Finstad. “We had chances late in regulation and most of overtime to put the game away but just didn’t come away with the game-winner.”
The Tigers also ended in a 0-0 tie against visiting Cambridge-Isanti Sept. 30 in a match that became more physical as it progressed. Raegan Anderson, Lydia Arens, Erica Schramel and Maggie Peterson all got off good shots in the first half to test C-I’s keeper.
“I thought we sent too many balls to the feet of their defensive line. Sometimes we have to go up and over, and it took us a half to get through to the girls,” said Coach Finstad. “But I thought this our one of our better games winning 50/50 balls.”
• On Sept. 24, host St. Michael-Albertville jumped out to a 2-0 lead with strong passing and held for a 3-1 M-8 victory. In the second half, Mattson scored to cut the deficit in half, then she sent a beautiful corner kick to Ashley Schramel who knocked it in, but that goal was called back. The Knights added their final goal with a minute to play.
