Stones Throw to host Section 5A Cross Country Meet

Stones Throw Golf Course in Milaca is scheduled to host the Section 5A Cross Country Championships Thursday, Oct. 24, with the girls race starting at 4 o’clock and the boys race starting at 4:45.

“We’re excited about hosting the section meet,” said Milaca Coach Dave Dillan, who’s also director for the meet. “It should be a great meet.

“Pierz has hosted the meet for as long as I can remember but this year Pierz moved to a different section due to a new section alignment. So the section needed a new host site. At a spring meeting it was discussed and Milaca was suggested because of our experience hosting large meets like the Milaca Mega Meet. Of course we were willing because it’s such a great meet and we can have our kids run on their home course. We’re thankful Stones Throw allows us to host the meet.”

Dillan listed Annandale, St. Cloud Cathedral and Spectrum as favorites for the girls title and Mora as the favorite for the boys title, although one of the Mustangs’ top runners could miss the meet because of an injury.

The top two teams advance to the Class A State Team Meet, with the top eight individuals who are not on a state-qualifying team, also advancing to the Class A State Individual Meet.

Milaca’s tentative boys lineup for the section meet included senior Cam Sundberg, junior Dray Thomas-Ferry, eighth-grader Jon Hall, junior Jake Riebel, junior Cole Patten, and ninth-grader Zack Korvela. Ninth-graders Sam and Gabe Petty were alternates.

The tentative girls lineup included junior Alex Ploeger, ninth-grader Emma Bolt, sophomore Lizzy Fordyce, senior Ellen So, senior Tania Holm, seventh-grader Jerica Ploeger, eighth-grader Kendall Rensenbrink and alternate eighth-grader  Emma Burns.

“We’re hoping to end our season with our best times and maybe send someone to state,” said Dillan.

Milaca finished seventh in the girls division and eighth in the boys division at the Granite Ridge Conference Meet Tuesday, Oct. 15, at Albany. Little Falls won the boys title while Cathedral won girls honors.

Ploeger led Milaca’s girls and gained all-conference honors by placing 10th in 16:37.70.

Sundberg placed 18th in 17:57.20 and earned all-conference honorable mention honors.
