Juveniles with loaded handgun and homemade bomb arrested in connection with burglaries

Two juveniles will have a long weekend in Sherburne County jail after being arrested Oct. 18 by Elk River Police in connection with an ongoing investigation conducted by the Sherburne County Sheriff’s Office.

According to Sheriff Joel Brott, investigators from the Criminal Investigation Division developed information that identified two juveniles who were believed to be involved in a number of crimes, including burglary, theft and criminal damage to property, in and near the city of Zimmerman. Investigators conducted surveillance of the residence of one of the juveniles and observed the juvenile leave the residence in a car, which was later determined to be stolen.

A short time later, the Elk River Police Department received a call that two juveniles were switching license plates with a different car in Elk River. Officers from the Elk River Department located the juveniles in the same vehicle that the investigators had previously observed leave Zimmerman.

Elk River Officers attempted to stop the vehicle and a chase ensued. The vehicle was eventually stopped, without injuries, and a loaded handgun was found in the vehicle.

The juveniles were interviewed and they admitted to being involved in additional crimes, which led to a search of their residences.

In one of the residences, deputies located what appeared to be a homemade explosive device. The Minneapolis Police Department Bomb Squad was called to the scene to deal with the device.

The juveniles are being held pending arraignment.
