Wolves seek to defend title at Waconia meet

Milaca’s wrestling team will open its season Saturday at the Waconia Wildcats Invitational.

Just like it did a year ago.

And, the Wolves are hoping for the same results as they begin their second season under co-coaches Mitch Vedders and Clay Hoeck.

Milaca went 4-0 to win the 2012 Waconia meet, topping LeSueur-Henderson 67-8, Marshall 42-30 and Waconia 37-30 before trimming Shakopee 39-27 in what proved to be the title match.

The team lineup is the same this year, with the first round starting at 9 a.m. and matches continuing through the morning and afternoon.

“It’s a good way to pen the season,” said Hoeck. “We’ll face some good teams and individuals.”

Hunter Noor at 120 pounds, Mike Hoffman at 126, Joey Curtis at 132, Jonah Gahm and Josh Otten at 170 were unbeaten at the 2012 Waconia tourney, with Otten notching three pins.

Hoffman, Curtis and Gahm have graduated while Noor and Otten return as juniors.

Also returning from the team that won the Waconia title are eighth-grader Jon Hall, senior Ray Hoffman, sophomore Dru Kuchenbaker, junior Jack Barsody, junior Aaron Moscho, senior Jorgen Erickson, junior Austin Weidner junior Jake Merten, junior Zach Peterson and senior Brandon Merten. Peterson’s pin at 220 clinched the win over Shakopee.

Milaca opened drills Monday, Nov. 18.

“We’ve had good practices,” said Vedders. “Things are going well.

“And, everyone is looking forward to getting the season underway.”

The Wolves open their dual season with a Granite Ridge Conference match against Little Falls Friday, Dec. 6, at Milaca, at 7:30. Milaca hosts its invitational Saturday, Dec. 7, with the first round at 9 a.m.
