Milaca at Foley match tonight (Friday)

Milaca’s wrestling team travels to Foley tonight (Friday) for the annual rivalry match with the Falcons.

Enough said? Probably.

The annual clash generally means an entertaining match in front of a full gymnasium of boisterous fans clad in red and blue.

Foley is 19-3 after winning the Forest Lake Duals Tournament Saturday while Milaca is 17-6 after topping Pine City-Hinckley-Finlayson Thursday, Jan. 23, at Milaca.

The Falcons had been ranked No. 1 in Class AA by The Guillotine magazine until dropping to No. 2 behind Simley in rankings released last week.

Foley’s losses have been to St, Michael-Albertville (ranked No. 2 in Class AAA), 42-17, Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City (No. 1 in Class A) 32-25 and Cambridge-Isanti (No. 5 in Class AAA) 29-28.

Milaca’s losses have been to teams either ranked in the top 12 or in the Guillotine’s “Lean and Mean” category in their respective classes. The Wolves were listed in the Class AA “Lean  and Mean” category last week.

“We know Foley is very strong, as usual,” said Milaca Co-Head Coach Mitch Vedders. “But, it’s always a fun night and we’ve got some good kids, too.”

Vedders and Milaca’s other co-head coach Clay Hoeck both wrestled against Foley many times.

The Falcons have five ranked wrestlers.

Senior Tyler Funk is No. 3 at 126 pounds, junior Carter Nielsen is No. 2 at 145, senior Tyler Midas is No. 4 at 182, senior Mitch Struffert is No. 4 at 195 and senior Mitch Keeler is No. 9 at 220.

Milaca has three ranked wrestlers.

Senior Ray Hoffman is No. 9 at 120, junior Austin Weidner is No. 7 at 182 and senior Brandon Merten is No. 6 at heavyweight.

Last year the Falcons trimmed the Wolves 47-15 at Milaca.

Unless the teams meet at the state tournament, this will be the final time Foley Co-Head Coach Lyle Freudenberg coaches against Milaca. Freudenberg, the Falcons’ longtime head coach, is sharing duties with Scott Gorecki, who will be head coach next season.

The Falcons face No. 4-ranked Hutchinson (Class AA) tonight (Thursday) at Hutchinson.

Milaca is at the Blaine Tournament Saturday at 9 a.m. The teams there include Rosemount, No. 9 in Class AAA.
