Tiger boys head to Hermantown for 7AAA hoops opener

Princeton boys basketball was seeded in the No. 6 slot for Section 7AAA when the quarterfinals begin Friday, Feb. 28 (7 p.m.), sending them to No. 3 Hermantown (17-9) in a rematch of last year’s opening playoff game. Six-time defending champ Grand Rapids (15-9) is the No. 2 seed in that half of the section and will face No. 7 Duluth Denfeld (5-19) in the opener.

The 7AAA semifinals will be Tuesday, March 4 inside the Hibbing Memorial Arena (Tigers’ half plays at 7:45 p.m.). Cloquet (21-9) earned the No. 1 seed in the other bracket half after defeating Grand Rapids and splitting with Hermantown this season.

Princeton boys basketball closed the regular season with two victories and heads into the Section 7AAA playoffs this week.

In the Saturday night home double-header with North Branch, the Tigers received 28 points from Jack Sinkel and 26 by Caleb Scharber in their 88-77 win over the Vikings. Tanner Kinney contributed 14 points, with Brady Peterson scoring 11 and Marcus Flicek five points.

Princeton’s final home game of the season was a 69-56 win over Duluth East in a make-up game on Feb. 24. Sinkel and Scharber again led PHS with 26 and 15 points.

PHS Girls split with Vikings

Princeton out-scored North Branch 12-2 in overtime to take the Feb. 18 Mississippi 8 match 75-65 on the road. Haley Sandin scored 15 points and dished six assists on the Vikings. Anna Oakes doubled-up for the Tigers with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Opening the Feb. 22 double-header with the boys, the Tiger girls were clipped by the Vikings 65-60. Princeton’s Feb. 20 game at St. Francis was rescheduled for Feb. 26. The Tigers will close the regular season with a March 1 home game with Becker which is the girls’ “Play for the Cure” fund raising night.
