Wolves wrestlers drop two in team action

Milaca’s trip to the team competition of the Minnesota State Wrestling tournament has been deemed as a success by its coaching staff, despite a pair of losses that sent the wolves home without a championship crown.
The Wolves opened with a 40-27 loss to eventual state runner-up, Scott West, which came into the tournament with just two losses on the season.
The boys fought a tough battle to a 28-28 tie to eventual consolation winner Pequot Lakes-Pine River, getting knocked from further tourney play by a tie-breaker because Pequot Lake won eight duals and Milaca had won two less at six, Milaca Wresling co-coach Clay Hoeck said.
“We knew going in it was going to be tough,” Hoeck said of the match-up with Scott West. “At the same time, we knew there was an opportunity to win at a lot of weights.”
Those points came at the 120 weight where Ray Hoffman first put Milaca on the scoreboard. Jon Hall at 106 and Moses Danilyuk at 113 came out and got pinned.
“With Jon and Moses coming out and getting pinned, we needed points,” Hoeck said.
Hollman pinned Carter Piche of Scott West at the 2:20 mark.
“Ray did what he did all season, he went out and got a pin,” Hoeck said. That’s his job as a senior captain…to go out and get it done.”
Milaca’s Mason Hoskins was pinned by David Flynn at 126 pounds, followed by Kyle Starr’s loss by an 8-0 major decision to Jacob Bcklund at the 132 weight and Zack Siegle’s 9-0 major decision over Milaca’s Dru Kuchenbacher at 138 pounds.
At 145, Milaca’s Jack Barsody won by a 3-1 decision over Shane Abraham.
“Jack went out and knew he had to put more points on the board,” Hoeck said.
“He went out and beat a pretty good kid,” Hoeck said.
Aaron Moscho followed up the Barsody win by pinning Jack Storlie at 4:50.
“It was the match-up we wanted,” Hoeck said. “Aaron went out and got six nice points for our team.”
Scott West wrapped up their first-round victory with three straight wins over Milaca wrestlers: Andrew Fogerty with a pin over Jack Gutlovics at 1:34 at the 160 weight; Derek Dahlke’s pin of Milaca’s Jorgen Erickson at 3:40 at 170 pounds; and Ray Carter’s 7-3 decision over the Wolves’ Josh Otten at the 182 weight.
Milaca closed out with three wins. At 195, Austin Weidner erned a 8-4 decision over Jake Shultz; Colton Sailor earned a 6-0 decision over Daniel Kochlin and heavyweight wrestler Branden Merten pinned Josiah Schatz at the 1:57 mark.
“Austin was bumped up from 182 and we got the match-up we wanted. He went and got his win and more points for Milaca,” Hoeck said.
“Sailor is aggressive and goes out after it,” Hoeck said. “He likes to win and brought us some point.”
As for Merten, his coach said he was after one more pin.
“At the level he wrestles at, he wanted another pin for himself — and got it,” Hoeck said.
In consolation action, Milaca lost four of its first five duals against Pequot Lakes to put itself in a hole.
The Wolves finished with wins in four of its last six duals, including pins from Josh Otten, Austin Weidner, Colton Sailor and Brandon Merten.
The coaching staff deemed the 2014 season a success. It was the first state team appearance for wrestlers under coaches Mitch Vedders and Clay Hoeck.
“For us to bring a team down for the first time was such a great experience to be a part of,” Hoeck said.
Hoeck and Vedders are proud of their team.
“Our goal was to get to State, and we did that,” Hoeck said.
“It was a lot of fun and our guys got to experience something not a lot of guys get to do,” he said.
