The Milaca High School Symphonic Band received a Superior Rating, while the Concert Band achieved an Excellent Rating during the Minnesota State High School League Section 5A Large Group Contest on Thursday, March 13, at Rush City High School.
According to Band Director Andrew Nelson, his younger Concert Band was “just one point away from a Superior rating.”
Proud of his older group (Symphonic Band) that received a Superior Rating, Nelson said, “We had very high scores.”
On a 40-point scale, with three judges doing the scoring, Milaca musicians were given marks of 38, 39 and 39.
“This was playing ‘Category 1’ music, which is the most difficult category,” Nelson said.
In addition, the Symphonic Band was named as the “Best at Site” band and had the highest scores of the day for any competing 5A school.
