Peterman to take on skating marathon

A Milaca para educator will be heading northeast to the Apostle Islands this weekend to try her luck in her first ever inline skating marathon.

Melissa Peterman will trade her shoes for blades on June 14 as she goes to northern Wisconsin and the shores of Lake Superior to participate in the annual race.

Peterman is originally from Princeton where she ran track and cross country in high school, which she enjoyed. She began skating last summer and heard from a co-worker that inline skating marathons were really enjoyable.

“I thought, ‘well, Why not? I want to try this,’” Peterman said.

As for why she chose the Apostle Islands race, the reason was simple.

“It’s the first one of the summer, and I’ve never been there, so I thought ‘why not,’” Peterman said.

Peterman went to college in Duluth as well, so she wants to see the other side of the bay (The Apostle Islands are northeast of Duluth in Wisconsin).

To train for the race Peterman did a lot of indoor training.

“This past winter I worked out at the gym and did a lot of training with fitness instructors,” Peterman said. “I ran a lot on the treadmill, and every chance I get I try to get some miles on my blades.”

Though she admits she probably should have trained even more than she has.

Her biggest goal is just to finish and be able to say that she did it. If all goes well Peterman hopes to do another one later this summer.

“I’m looking forward to doing other marathons, maybe the Twin Cities in August, and see where it takes me,” Peterman said. “It is a great hobby, and I really enjoy it.”

Inline skating marathons have grown in popularity in recent years and are often run alongside running races. There are several of them throughout the year across the country. In the Midwest some of the more prominent races include: The Chicagoland Inline Marathon, the Minnesota Half Marathon and Grandma’s Marathon.

The Apostle Islands are known for their ice caves, and while there won’t be any of those this time of year, Peterman still hopes to enjoy all the islands and the race have to offer.

It beats the heck out of the office.
