Proposal collapses for Mille Lacs, Aitkin counties to share assessor

Mille Lacs and Aitkin counties are not going to have a contract after all to try out Mille Lacs County’s proposal of using the services of the Aitkin County assessor part time for six months.
The Mille Lacs Board had been hoping that such a contract could lead to a long-term arrangement where Mille Lacs didn’t have to have its own staff assessor. A vacancy appeared early this month when longtime Mille Lacs County Assessor Pat Stotz retired.
Mille Lacs County Board Clerk Lisa Herges said Aitkin County “is no longer interested” in the six-month trial proposal. Both county boards would have had to each sign a contract for the arrangement. The contract Mille Lacs County proposed to Aitkin was for Mille Lacs to pay Aitkin County $34 per hour for each of the 70 hours per month the Aitkin County assessor would have provided assessor services in Mille Lacs County, plus mileage.
Since the deal fell through last week, Mille Lacs County began advertising to hire a full-time assessor to fill it assessor vacancy.
