Mille Lacs County appoints new assessor to fill vacancy

Without discussion, the Mille Lacs County Board of Commissioners appointed an assessor on Aug. 19 to fill the vacancy left by longtime assessor Pat Stotz, who retired from the job last heim assessor1
The appointee is Allen “Al” Heim, of rural Sartell. The appointment, which became effective Aug. 25, was one of 20 items on the Aug. 19 meeting’s consent agenda that the board approved in one motion.
The board two months earlier entertained having a part-time assessor. The board made a proposal whereby the Aitkin County assessor would be a part-time assessor for Mille Lacs while still being the Aitkin County assessor. But Aitkin County decided not to accept the proposal.
The Mille Lacs board then decided to hire a full-time assessor, keeping with the format that the county had in the past. Four persons applied and the board interviewed two of the applicants. The appointment of Heim was contingent upon the Minnesota Commissioner of Revenue’s approval. Mille Lacs County has four-year appointment terms for its assessors. Stotz’s term expires Dec. 31, 2016, so the board would have to make a reappointment then.
Heim, on the day of his appointment, said he has been in the assessing profession a little more than 34 years, and that it has been at all levels. He was an assessor for the city of Moorhead and the counties of Todd and Roseau, and for 18 years he was a regional representative of the Minnesota Department of Revenue.
“I enjoy the job, enjoy the people,” Heim said. “It’s an interesting profession.” As long as the job remains interesting, he is not yet ready to retire, he added.
In related action, the board made a few revisions in the job description for its county assessor.
Heim’s starting salary in the job is $80,392.
