Garage fire engulfs Milaca home

Milaca Fire DeptThe Milaca Fire Department responded to structure fire about 9:39 a.m. Sept. 25 at 13141 Gable Road, outside the city limits. The fire was listed in a police report as a “garage fire.”
Assistant Milaca Fire Chief Greg Lerud said about the house, “It was not occupied at the time of the fire.”
The home was engulfed in flames when crews arrived. Firefighters battled the blaze for three hours, and both the Foreston and Princeton departments assisted Milaca. The Mille Lacs County Sheriff’s office also assisted at the scene, and North Ambulance stood by to monitor firefighters’ health.
Lerud said the cause of the fire is not yet known. He said the home sustained “extensive damage” and speculates that it is not habitable. He said the extent of the damage will be determined by an insurance professional.
Lerud and Foreston Fire Chief Greg Ransom agreed it was unusual to have two structure fires in the area on the same day. Each department barely had time to return to their stations before the second call for the Foreston fire came.
Ransom said it was a long day of firefighting, “To have two structure fires in the area in one day is kind of rare.”
