Board may ask fisheries manager to present

As the commissioners discussed tourism loans July 5, Board Chairman Roger Tellinghuisen asked if the County Board could do anything to encourage the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to expedite solutions so the lake could reopen to walleye fishing. County Administrator Pat Oman said that item has been No. 1 on the county’s list of legislative priorities; the Mille Lacs Lake community is concerned that nothing has happened at the state level. Commissioner David Oslin, also a member of the Mille Lacs Lake fisheries committee, suggested asking the DNR fisheries chief to come and address the board and talk about fishing and the economy on the “north end.” Oslin also said a federal expert will conduct an analysis of the processes used so far, and the review will be independent of the DNR.
